Class size and course capping

While the college strives to accommodate all students who want to take a particular course and who have adequate preparation, occasionally course enrollments must be limited to allow effective teaching and learning. A course may be capped by the approval of the Committee on Academic Policies and Planning (CAPP) if it is determined that class size will hinder the learning process. The registrar’s office will notify students who have been dropped from a capped course, giving them an opportunity to register for another course. Students will be retained or excluded on the basis of criteria approved by the CAPP, for example, class standing, major, or random chance. Students who wish to appeal their exclusion from the class may appeal with the petition to enroll in a capped class form, available in the registrar’s office. These petitions should inform the committee why the course is an academic necessity for the individual.

Students who have met the prerequisites and are successfully enrolled in a capped course at the end of the preceding spring semester are guaranteed entry to that class. Special consideration will be given to petitions from new transfer students and to students returning from leave or study abroad.
