Hike in Tilden Park
Please join the Bay Area alumni chapter and renowned environmental-health
scientist, writer, and mountaineer Arlene Blum '66 for a leisurely and
conversational hike in Berkeley's beautiful Tilden Park from noon to
about 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 8. Bring a bag lunch, and rain gear,
if appropriate (we'll hike come rain or shine).
Arlene is honored to have been selected by Reed's department of chemistry to write a piece for the Festschrift volume, which will include one essay by an alumnus/alumna from each department to honor the college's 100th anniversary in 2011.
Directions:
We will meet at the overflow parking lot for the Little Train just east of Grizzly Peak Boulevard. The Little Train is a few hundred yards south of where South Park Drive meets Grizzly Peak Boulevard.
Turn east off Grizzly Peak as though you were going to the Little Train, but don't turn left into the main train parking lot. Instead go straight and park in the first overflow lot for the train. We will meet at the trail heading east from the overflow lot. RSVP with the subject "Hiking in Tilden Park" to sfbayreed@gmail.com or 415/643-7043. On the day-of only, call 510/919-6363 or 415/205-0519 if you are lost finding the parking lot.

(Google Maps gets a little confused in the
park, so we suggest consulting a plain ol' paper map before setting
out!)
Public transit & ridesharing:
This can be a difficult spot to reach by transit, so we will coordinate
a rideshare from the Rockridge BART station at 11:30 a.m. Drivers are
also needed, so please let us know if you're willing, and how many
passengers you can take for the short drive to the park. Please put "rideshare" in
the subject line of your RSVP message if you are asking for, or offering,
a ride.
Thirsty Third Thursday
Ben & Nick's
Bar & Grill, 5612 College Ave., conveniently located next
to the Rockridge BART station (for public transit as well as parking)
in the lovely Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland.
Look
for a poster or follow the sound of libertine rhetoric. 6 p.m. until
the last Reedie goes home.
For information or RSVP, contact sfbayreed@gmail.com.
Reading group
The Reed Peninsula Reading Group is a bunch of alumni who have been meeting monthly for the last ten years or more (no one can actually remember when we started). We meet at the home of a member on the second Wednesday of the month.
Our tastes are eclectic/catholic. We have read A
Social History of the Machine Gun as well as having a Kazuo Ishiguro
double-header night. We are open to all Reed alumni and their partners.
For more information, please contact Richard
Roistacher '65.
Facebook + Listserves
The chapter now has a Facebook page, check us out!
Also, the chapter has an email listserve to arrange get-togethers with fellow Reedies on short notice. If you want to invite Reedies to join you for a concert, movie, drink, dinner or a hike, please send an email to the list. This is an opt-in list, which means the only people who will see the announcements will be people who have subscribed to the web page. There is an option to get the messages combined in one message daily or weekly; please subscribe at https://www.lists.reed.edu/mailman/listinfo/alumni-bay-area-network
If you have an idea for an event please contact the Bay Area steering committee. We'd love to hear your ideas.
To contact the chapter, send email to alumni-bay-area-steering@lists.reed.edu or you can look up individual members using IRIS.
