SChinese New Year
Come celebrate San Francisco's Chinese New Year Parade with Reedies!
On Saturday, February 11 join us for a late lunch followed by gathering to see the Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade. The parade begins nearby at 5:15 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m.
About the parade: "Nowhere in the world will you see a lunar new year parade with more gorgeous floats, elaborate costumes, ferocious lions, exploding firecrackers, and of course the newly crowned Miss Chinatown U.S.A. and her court. A crowd favorite is the spectacular 250' Golden Dragon ("Gum Lung"). It takes a team of over 100 men and women from the martial arts group, White Crane, to carry this dragon throughout the streets of San Francisco."
We'll meet at the Yank Sing restaurant at the 49 Stevenson St. location (between First and Second streets, not the Rincon location!), within walking distance of the parade route. Our reservation is for 3 p.m., so please plan to gather a few minutes earlier so we can get our party together. Expected cost is in the $30+ per person range; please remember to bring cash for the bill. Seating is limited, so RSVP is required to sfbayreed@gmail.com by February 4.
We strongly encourage taking public transportation given the crowds expected for the parade.
Around 4:30-4:45 p.m. we'll walk over to corner of Second and Market (south side of Market) to meet for the parade, so if you want to skip lunch and find us there, come on down! This is where the parade starts, so we'll probably be a few buildings up from the corner on Market, headed towards Third, depending where we can find a spot. Look for someone holding a Reed sign (or the Griffin). Dress warmly, bring a camera, and plan to make some noise!
A map of the parade route, directions, and more can be found at http://www.chineseparade.com/route.asp
RSVP to sfbayreed@gmail.com with "Lunar New Year" in the subject line.
Thirsty Third Thursday
In the mood to hang out and have p.m.mething to drink and maybe dinner too? Share conversation and comestibles with fellow Reedies on Thirsty Third Thursday. Look for the pink table-top sign and the stuffed griffin at a pub/bar/restaurant near you.
For information or RSVP, contact sfbayreed@gmail

Reading group
The Reed Peninsula Reading Group is a bunch of alumni who have been meeting monthly for the last ten years or more (no one can actually remember when we started). We meet at the home of a member on the second Wednesday of the month.
Our tastes are eclectic/catholic. We have read A
Social History of the Machine Gun as well as having a Kazuo Ishiguro
double-header night. We are open to all Reed alumni and their partners.

Facebook + Listserves
The chapter now has a Facebook page, check us out!
Also, the chapter has an email listserve to arrange get-togethers with fellow Reedies on short notice. If you want to invite Reedies to join you for a concert, movie, drink, dinner or a hike, please send an email to the list. This is an opt-in list, which means the only people who will see the announcements will be people who have subscribed to the web page. There is an option to get the messages combined in one message daily or weekly; please subscribe at https://www.lists.reed.edu/mailman/listinfo/alumni-bay-area-network
If you have an idea for an event please contact the Bay Area steering committee. We'd love to hear your ideas.
To contact the chapter, send email to alumni-bay-area-steering@lists.reed.edu or you can look up individual members using IRIS.
