Guided gallery tour

To commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s voyage, the state of New York is hosting a number of events celebrating both Hudson and the Dutch culture in the area during the seventeenth century.* As part of the festivities, the Bard Graduate Center is hosting an exhibition entitled "Dutch New York Between East and West: The World of Margrieta Varick." The exhibit uses Margrieta van Varick’s probate inventory to reconstruct a picture of life and culture in colonial New York. See a scanned version of the program.

The Reed alumni chapter for New York has arranged for a guided tour of the exhibit at the Bard Graduate Center on October 15. The gallery will be open, free of admission, beginning at 6 p.m.; the tour will gather at 6:30 p.m.

After the tour (approximately 8:15 for those who do not attend the tour), all are welcome to join up (regardless of whether you go on the tour) for drinks and food at the Parlour, an Irish Pub & Restaurant (self-described and true). They are expecting a group from the Reed College alumni association, so just let them know you're with us.

Autumn hike

Autumn has come to the East Coast and with it, beautiful foliage. Come join the NYC alumni chapter for a hike in the woods to look at the leaves! We'll be meeting at the kiosk (that clock thingy in the middle of the main hall) at Grand Central Station at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 25 to head up to Cold Spring (just north of West Point) for some hiking. Look for the Reed sweaters/signs or call 216/288-0206 if you're having trouble finding us.

We'll arrive in Cold Spring around 11 a.m. There are numerous hikes in the area, ranging from the Breakneck Ridge for those wanting a challenge to the more leisurely Bull Run. We'll figure out the day's activities based on who shows up and what you're game for, but most likely we'll have groups doing both hikes. Afterward we'll meet up at the local pub to share our adventures over a pint or a snack. Multiple trains run in the afternoon, so departure time is flexible. RSVP to Julia Staverosky '02.

Thirsty Third Thursday

Share conversation and comestibles with fellow Reedies on Thirsty Third Thursday. Look for the pink table-top sign and the stuffed griffin at a pub/bar/restaurant near you.

Facebook + Listserves

The chapter now has a Facebook page, check us out!

Also, the chapter has an email listserve to arrange get-togethers with fellow Reedies on short notice. If you want to invite Reedies to join you for a concert, movie, drink, dinner or a hike, please send an email to the list. This is an opt-in list, which means the only people who will see the announcements will be people who have subscribed to the web page. There is an option to get the messages combined in one message daily or weekly; please subscribe at https://www.lists.reed.edu/mailman/listinfo/alumni-ny-network

If you have an idea for an event please contact the NY chapter. We'd love to hear your ideas.
