The admission process

At Reed, each application is considered in light of the student's individual circumstances and academic and personal qualifications. The purpose of the admission process at Reed is to determine an applicant's preparation, motivation, and ability to participate successfully in the academic and social community at Reed. Admission decisions are based on academic achievement, verbal and quantitative skills, writing ability, qualities of character and commitment to learning. We set no arbitrary limit on class rank, grade point average, or standardized tests.

Each application is read by at least two admission counselors who will decide for those applications for which there is no doubt. When those readers are in disagreement about a decision the particular application in question will go to committee and the whole counseling staff will come to a final admission decision.

The application is considered holistically. The transcript, essays, interviews, test scores, extra curricular experiences as well as recommendations can all help us to determine a student's academic preparedness for the rigor of the Reed curriculum. The college wants to see a course load in which a student takes advantage of the most difficult courses available at their high school.

Each applicant group is read separately. Every application is read by a counselor and then reviewed by the entire Admission committee.
