Setup Guides

To make setting up your computer at Reed as easy as possible, we have prepared setup guides for you to easily find the most commonly request information for your computer.

Select your operating system to begin:

We also have information for using unix.

Anti-Virus

To keep our network and your computer virus free, we are pleased to offer a free copy of Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus (Mac and PC) for community members. To download your copy, please visit our download site.

NOTE: If you already have anti-virus software (such as McAfee or other versions of Norton Anti-Virus) on your computer, this must be uninstalled prior to installing Norton. Other security software (such as Ad-Aware & Spybot) is fine to use alongside our version of Norton.

Network & Accounts

Do you know what a Kerberos account is? How about the availability of Reed's wireless signal? For information on these topics and more, please visit our Network & Accounts page.

Email

Please see our email page for information on setting up Thunderbird or Apple Mail, using Webmail, or dealing with spam.

Printing

Reed has printers available for student, faculty, and staff use. For students, these printers are billed per page printing, with $20 of free printing available each year (except senior year, in which students are given $40 of free printing).

Printing setup instructions are available based on your status:

  • Faculty/Staff
  • Students

Proxy

Need to access library resources off-campus? Reed has a proxy server available for current members of the Reed community to access on-campus resources from whereever they might be* (*internet access required).

We have instructions available to setup the proxy to run automatically and manually. Since the manual proxy sends all of your web content through Reed servers (instead of just the protected content), we highly recommend using the automatic proxy setup.
