Creating Catalogs

Creating a catalog is a fairly straightforward, but nonetheless rather involved, task. First, you should have a clear idea of what you want and need:

  • What will you use the catalog for?
  • Who will have access to your catalog?
  • Where/how will you store your images? (For served catalogs especially, this is more of a structural question than a geographical question.)
  • What sort of data do you want to attach to items in your catalog?
  • How do you want to organize items in your catalog? (What galleries or categories do you desire?)

Next, open Portfolio. Click the icon in the OS X dock, or double click on the program file or its alias to do so.

Portfolio will ask you to open a catalog. Instead of browsing to find a one, click the New Catalog button. (If Portfolio is already open, choose New Catalog... from the File menu.)

Portfolio will open a window prompting you to name your catalog and decide where it will be stored. Name your catalog, find or create the folder(s) for it and for its images, and click Save. Portfolio will open a blank gallery window for your new catalog.

Sharing Catalogs

If you want to share a catalog among faculty and/or staff, or make it available to your students via the Portfolio server, contact Fred Lifton (x7297).
