Help, I'm teaching tomorrow, what do I do? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Step 1: Relax. Portfolio is pretty easy to use and you have lots of resources for help. First, call or email Fred Lifton (x7297) to see if he can come give you some hands-on training. He may even be able to come to the class to provide support. Okay? Now read on to learn the basic steps needed to present Portfolio images in class. Note: you will need passwords to access either the webpage or the served databases. Contact Fred Lifton for all passwords. Step 2: There are two ways to access a database, directly using the Portfolio client application or, if you're using the Classics/Hum110 images, via the web using your favorite browser. The web is by far the simplest to use. Visit the Classics Database Website Help Page for more information on using the web version. Step 3 : Locate the images you want to use. There are many ways to locate images in Portfolio. The easiest is to simply use one of the pre-existing galleries. These are groups of images that have been selected for use with a given topic, e.g., Augustus. Galleries are listed on the left-side of the main Portfolio window. Simply click once on a gallery to see the images in it. Be patient, sometimes it takes a second or two for the images to show up. Visit the Gallery Help page for more information on using and creating galleries
Step 4 : Once you've located the images or galleries you wish to use, you simply need to project them in class. If you have a laptop you can bring it to your room to hook up to the projection system. Or, you can use the computer already in the classroom. For help with using projection equipment, visit the Projection Help pages. You can also call Jim Holmes in the AV department (x7711) for assistance with any projection issues. You can look at your images from the regular Portfolio client interface, or you can view them in a slideshow format. In either case, to view a full-size image you must be connected to the media server. Talk to CUS if you don't know how to connect to a server. Note that it's not necessary to open any document on the server. It only needs to be connected so that the Portfolio client can find the image previews needed to display a full-sized image. For mor information on creating and running slideshows, visit the Slideshow Help pages.
