Reed College Technology Advisory
Council
1997
The Reed College Technology Advisory Council
(TAC) is a nation-wide network of alumni, industry representatives and friends
of Reed College, all with special expertise in information technology. It
was created as a forum where ideas and issues relating to computing at Reed
can be discussed so that all viewpoints are exposed. The College Computing
Policy Commitee (CCPC) can use the outside perspective to help in formulating
directional policies.
Recent issues discussed include:
PC monotheism, a discussion of the pros
and cons of continuing to be a Mac only campus.
Issues surrounding software maintenance
costs and whether "web TV" or web-only stations might be something
the College needs to investigate.
To what extent technology should be a replacement
for, supplement to, or enhancement of, Reed's goals of independent investigation
and learning about learning.
"TAC members both give and take from
their participation. They provide experience and insight and take away ideas
from faculty, students and other TAC members. The exchange is challenging
(and fun) as the different worlds collide!" says Bob Gillespie '55,
executive director of Northwest Academic Computing Consortium (NWACC), TAC
member, and longtime advisor to the College on technology matters.
The Technology Innovation Fund, initiated
by two members of TAC, is a resource for special technology projects. It
has funded things like the Computer Art Studio, the online Reed Tree Database,
and the Faculty Multimedia Lab.
The next TAC meeting is scheduled for October
17-18, 1997. If you have questions about TAC please feel free to contact
Marty Ringle, Director of Computing & Information Services.
