The Department of
Arcane Sciences

NOTE: This is not, of course, a real academic department at Reed. It is just a showcase of our new design.

The Arcane Sciences Department offers a rigorous course of study for students interested in the arcane arts and the theory and practice of magic. From introductory classes in basic theory and the historical roots of the magical world to advanced seminars on modern spellcraft and ethical conundrums, the curriculum offered by the Department of Arcane Sciences at Reed College teaches students both practical use and critical understanding of magic at all its levels.

Study Abroad and Dual Degree Programs

For students interested in a broader selection of majors, Reed College offers dual degree or “three two” programs in conjunction with Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Institute of Thaumaturgy. Students attend three years at Reed and two years at another university, and are rewarded with a Bachelor’s Degree in Arcane Sciences from Reed and a Bachelor’s Degree (specific degree depends on student and institution) from the other institution.

Reed also offers numerous opportunities for study abroad. Students may spend a semester or a year at a foreign institution; possible locations for Arcane Studies majors include small islands off the coast of Greece, the Isle of Avalon, Atlantis, and the Tower of Babel in the former Mesopotamia.

Summer Program

The Department of Magic Summer Program in the Arcane Arts accepts high school age students from all over the world, including such prestigious institutions Hogwart’s School of Wizarding and Wizard’s Hall. The program challenges students to think critically and develop more creative and mature approaches to magical problems, while instilling awareness of safety procedures and an understanding of the risks of the magical practice.
