Community Safety
Information & Policies

The community safety office is in the 28 West building on the Reed College campus and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We operate the college switchboard, dispatch officers by radio to calls for service, and provide foot, bicycle, and vehicle patrols of the college campus and its facilities.
Access to Campus Buildings
Hours
for various campus facilities are determined at the beginning of each
year, with many areas restricted for all or part of the day. All campus
residence halls, for example, are locked 24 hours a day to all but
residents with keys. Other areas, such as the Reed radio station KRRC,
student organizations, and various laboratories, are accessible only to
pre-authorized people. Please help us keep the campus secure by closing
doors that have been propped open and locking areas when you leave. As
a general rule, community safety will provide access to a secured area
only to authorized students, faculty, or staff members. If you have
questions, please call community safety at the main campus switchboard
by dialing "0" from any campus telephone.
Escorts and the Night Bus
Working to keep the campus safe, the community safety office provides escorts for students, faculty, and staff after dark. Community safety officers also provide dormitory unlock services when students are locked out. At night students may call the switchboard (dial "0" from any campus telephone) and a community safety officer will respond and unlock the door after checking the person's college ID.
As an additional safety measure, the college operates a night bus program to transport students to their home. The night bus begins service at 10:15 p.m. and shuts down for the night at 2 a.m. The drivers attempt to maintain a 30-minute schedule, and the community safety office maintains cell phone contact with the driver of the night bus at all times. If you need night bus schedule information after hours, just dial "0" from any campus telephone.
The Honor Council of Reed College
The community constitution, ratified in November 1989, called for the creation of an honor council to foster the application of the honor principle in the governance of the Reed community-students, faculty and staff members-and recognizes that these groups are equal in rights, privileges, and responsibilities.
The honor council has been charged with:
- Educating incoming members of the community about the meaning and the importance of responsible and honorable conduct
- Advising community members about the honor principle and how to resolve honor issues either formally or informally
- Informally mediating honor issues
One misconception about the honor council is that it is a group that makes judgments and doles out penalties. Rather, the honor council, as stated in the paragraph above, educates, advises, and mediates differences among community members.
The honor council is not the place to bring an honor case.
Generally, the honor council will mediate an honor issue, and other boards, such as the student judicial board, hears honor cases.
The honor council may be reached by email at hc@lists.reed.edu; the student judicial board can be reached by phone at 503/777-7809 or by email at j-board@reed.edu.
ID Cards
The community safety office is responsible for college identification cards. There is no charge for the first ID card issued. A fee of $10 will be charged for each additional ID.
Lost & Found
As part of switchboard operations, the community safety office maintains a campus lost and found. Items turned in are recorded and held for 30 days. After the 30-day period all items are turned over to one of several local charitable organizations. Please check with lost and found if you are missing an item. If you believe the item has been stolen, community safety will complete a Portland Police Bureau report for you.
Other Services
Community safety officers will assist you with battery jump service and vehicle unlocks. Vehicle registration (login requred) is free at Reed College, and registration provides information to officers so they may find you if there is a problem with your vehicle. Vehicle registration also allows community safety officers to call you to move your vehicle (if you park in an illegal parking area) before the tow truck arrives. Registering your vehicle is as simple as stopping in at the 28 West building and completing a form, or completing the web registration form (login requred).
Substance Abuse
The drinking age in Oregon is 21. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) regulates alcohol. In accordance with federal guidelines, Reed College supports local, state, and federal laws regarding alcohol and controlled substances. The college also provides education and assistance for those who need assistance. The abuse of any substance is intemperate and inimical to the mission of Reed College.
The health center (extension 7349) offers both on-and off-campus referrals for substance abuse and counseling. There are many recovery groups in the Portland area in addition to a group that meets weekly on the Reed campus. For further information on the college's drug and alcohol policy, consult the Reed College guidebook.
