Giving to Reed

Balmer photoCharitable giving, even to the most worthy causes, is a difficult sell in a bearish economy, so I am not going to try to sell it. Instead, what I encourage is investment.

If you are reading this, you know that Reed College is a unique and vital institution of higher education. One of the most important ways you can invest in the future of Reed is through your gifts to the Annual Fund.

Your Annual Fund gift underwrites every aspect of each Reed student’s educational experience. From the salaries of Reed’s faculty, to the books in the library, to the roof over the Student Union, you provide the environment and stimulation that are necessary for each Reedie to hone the creativity, intellect, and analytical skills needed to address the problems of an increasingly complex world. Your Annual Fund gift also helps some of the most qualified students afford the opportunity of a Reed education.

Like any wise investment, your Annual Fund contribution reaps rewards. A strong Annual Fund provides Reed with the economic freedom it needs to adhere to its educational principles without compromise, particularly now, in the face of lower endowment earnings. Steadfast adherence to those principles positions Reed as a model for other colleges and universities to follow.

Perhaps the greatest return on your investment, however, is the training of future generations of critical thinkers who believe that an unexamined life is not worth living. As Reed approaches the end of its first century, your Annual Fund investment ensures that we will all enjoy the benefits of Reed College for another hundred years.
