Intro This paper is a survey and analysis of religious symbols and objects in and around Portland Oregon's Chinatown. Religion, like most other things, does not develop in a vacuum and is integrally associated with the communities in which it is found. Therefore, I will begin this paper with a discussion of what the current Chinatown neighborhood is like. Second, I will identify and describe some of the Chinese objects and symbols in the area. My focus will be on what I think their meaning is in their current context. Through out this paper, I will be evaluating Chinatown from a “non-Chinese” perspective, which is the type of perspective that views Chinatown most. I think it is important to recognize the perspective of the paper because I believe it is what interpretation is based on in its entirety. |
