Final Report

The project goals included developing web-based syllabi and case studies for several applied microeconomic courses.

During the grant period I learned and then used Claris Home Page to develop web-based course syllabi for my fall 1998 classes. These syllabi extended work done in previous years by incorporating links to relevant sites, to sites used during class, to papers available through databases, and links describing course projects and assignments.

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics

Four Mellon projects were developed for the Survey of Econometric Methods class. These projects required students to find, retrieve, and manipulate data available through the web. Although I have not yet seen my course evaluations, the student reaction to these assignments was very positive.

Work on a case study for the Environmental and Natural Resource Economics class was started in late August. An interactive map developed for the case study is available at: http://fml.reed.edu/Noel/map.html. A change in the focus of this course toward a group project made the case study less critical to the course's goals.

The goals set forth in the Mellon proposal, to familiarize students with web-based datasets and to effectively integrate the web into my courses have been achieved although there is always room to do more. The extensive use of an overhead projector in both courses brought to my attention the need to change the way I teach to use these tools more effectively.

I am very pleased to report that students in the Environmental and Natural Resource economics class used the classroom projector and computer for their two project presentations. By the end of the semester three of the four groups in the class had learned and then incorporated projection and other computer tools into their presentations.

The students in both courses used the web-based syllabi extensively and provided positive feedback on the availability of these resources. I am currently developing web-based course syllabi for this coming semester and plan to continue developing assignments that integrate resources available on the web into my classes. Additionally, I plan to continue helping my colleagues learn about resources available on the web.
