Reedie/Jalapeño Cultural Exchange
The Reedie/Jalapeño Cultural Exchange (RJCE) was formed in 1999 to help create an annual cultural exchange between students at Reed College and the small community of El Trapiche, Nicaragua. In May of 2000, a dozen students traveled to El Trapiche and worked with Jalapeño families to conduct a community health project with long-term benefits. They spent two weeks producing and installing Lorena stoves, a lower-cost and more fuel-efficient stove than previous designs. They also taught the construction technique to several members of the local community, who have since built more than 70 stoves.
Reed Student Peace Action Network
The Reed chapter of the Student Peace Action Network (RSPAN) works, through a diversity of tactics including symbolic as well as concrete action, to confront, discover, expose, and fight against the root causes of war and repression, which include U.S. foreign policy and imperialism, racism, and corporate globalization. Concerning these issues, we attempt to educate ourselves and the Reed community, facilitate on- and off-campus action by Reed students, and create inclusive community and networking.
