She began writing in her late twenties, and has published stories and essays inthe New Yorker, Best American Short Stories, and elsewhere. Her debut collection, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, won the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, PEN/Hemingway Award, and Guardian First Book Prize, among many other awards. She received a Whiting Writers' Award and a residency fellowship from Lannan Foundation, and was recently chosen by Granta magazine as one of the best young American novelists. She lives in Oakland, California, with her husband and two sons, and teaches in the M.F.A. program at Mills College.

Montgomery's work has appeared in numerous publications, including Iowa Review, Denver Quarterly, Story Magazine, the American Book Review, the Antioch Review; and the anthology, The Honeymoon is Over. Editorial director of Tin House Books and executive editor for Tin House magazine, she is also the founding director for the Tin House Summer Writers Workshop. She received her undergraduate degree in biology from Antioch College, and an M.F.A. in creative writing from the Iowa Writer's Workshop, where she was the fiction editor for the Iowa Review. She lives with her husband and their two "bizarre" dogs in Portland, Oregon.

He was the author of more than 20 works, and was an active leader for numerous American Indian institutions. After Deloria died in 2005 Reed students and staff created the Vine Deloria Jr. lecture series to honor his memory. The series recognizes the work of Native American scholars whose intellectual pursuits reflect the spirit and commitment exhibited by Deloria. This series is a collaborative effort between faculty, students, and Reed's multicultural affairs office. Visiting presenters are selected by a committee of Native American scholars, Reed faculty, students, and staff. The inauguration of this series occurs in fall 2007.

Convocation Speaker, Pancho Savery, Professor of English & Humanities Pancho Savery has been a member of the Reed faculty since 1995. Prior to his appointment to the college, he taught for 15 years at the University of Massachusetts–Boston. Professor Savery teaches courses in modern and contemporary European and American drama, African American literature, American Indian literature, and American and European fiction. He has published essays on Ezra Pound, Adrienne Rich, Robert Creeley, Albert Murray, Robert Farris Thompson, Ralph Ellison, Cecil Brown, Saunders Redding, Tennessee Williams, James Baldwin, Roy DeCarava, and Langston Hughes, and also co-edited the book Approaches to Teaching Ellison's Invisible Man. In addition to his scholarly work, Professor Savery has published numerous poems, most recently in Hubbub, and has spoken at Portland theatres on Ntozake Shange, Tennessee Williams, and Suzan-Lori Parks. He is chair of Reed's English department, the Senior Symposium, the HIP Program, Reed's Diversity Committee, and is co-chair of the literature-theatre and history-literature majors.
