Orientation 2008

Just for Transfers
Welcome! Here is some information to get you started in your transition to Reed:
Orientation activities for transfer students
Lunch and panel discussion: Thursday, August 2
Meet with faculty, staff, and students to learn about dealing with credits and requirements, junior quals, and theses. Learn about activities and support for transfers at Reed.
Brunch at a local restaurant: Sunday, August 31
Join other transfer students for brunch at a local restaurant. More information will be available in the orientation schedule.
Transfer credit
Admitted transfer students should have received a transfer credit evaluation as part of the admission packet. The admission and the registrar’s offices complete this evaluation, which identifies what courses have transferred, what college requirements have been met, and what requirements remain to be completed.

Come prepared with syllabi and course descriptions from your previous college(s).
Registration packet
Upon your arrival at Reed, you will receive a registration packet, which will include an updated academic credit evaluation, as well as the time and location for your first meeting with your adviser.
Meeting with your adviser
During Orientation, you will meet with your adviser to plan your course of study. Your adviser will have a copy of your updated credit evaluation. Course descriptions and syllabi from your previous college(s) are helpful so that professors can get a fuller sense of the depth and breadth of completed coursework.
Humanities 110
At Reed, one requirement that everyone talks about is humanities. As a transfer student, it may not be necessary for you to take Humanities 110, but you are encouraged to take it if you have time. Regardless, you will receive a copy of the Iliad this summer. Read it and you’ll be prepared to take one of the best courses offered at Reed.
Get involved
The Reed community has many remarkable clubs and organizations covering a broad spectrum of interests. There is a long history of transfer student involvement in the Reed community and organizations, so don’t feel that you have arrived too late to be a full participant.
Navigating Reed—help available
We recognize that transfer students sometimes have specific needs. Student services will be in contact to see if you would like to partner with a seasoned transfer student who can help navigate your first semester at Reed. Consider getting to know one of these helpful students.
