Residence Life

Food and board plan

Students living in the residence halls, except those in the co-op, are required to be on the board plan and eat in the campus cafeteria, known as “commons.” Meals are always prepared with fresh seasonal ingredients, and special needs are accommodated, including a variety of vegetarian and vegan options. See web.reed.edu/res_life/living_at_reed/ for details on board plans. Most residence halls have kitchens for students to use for occasional meal preparation.

Off-campus housing

Some students choose to live off campus, either in an apartment or a shared house. Reed’s residence life office assists in finding off-campus housing, by providing a housing guide and roommate listing.

On-campus housing

New students are encouraged to live on campus and are assigned a residence hall and roommate based on their housing application and preference form, which was included in the student welcome packet. A housing lottery is held each April for continuing students who wish to live on campus. Extensive information about on-campus housing, including descriptions of residence halls and floor plans, is available at web.reed.edu/res_life/.

Returning students interested in living on campus must pay a $100 housing deposit and fill out a lottery card by April5 in order to participate in the housing lottery.

Students missing deadlines will be assisted on a first-come, first-served basis. Recently, demand for on campus housing has exceeded availability. Students are strongly encouraged to return the appropriate applications on or before the deadline.

Residence hall closures

The residence halls are open during fall and spring breaks, but are closed during the winter break. A small number of rooms are available for international students who are unable to return home over the winter break. Residence halls close at noon the day after commencement.

Residence hall room essentials

Reed provides a twin bed (extra long), a desk with chair, shelves, a bureau, ethernet and phone connections, window coverings, and a closet or wardrobe. Students should bring a mattress pad, sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, a phone, hangers, desk lamp, an alarm clock, and personal items. Some residence hall supplies are available at the Reed bookstore.
