Sports Center
now friendlier for students
Recent renovations in the Watzek Sports Center have changed the entire feeling in the building and brought skyrocketing numbers of students, faculty, and staff to the facility. Its much more welcoming, says Ann Casey, the program director for physical education. The renovations have created a social space as well as a state-of-the-art fitness place.
The change having the largest effect is the new cardiac theater fitness room; 16 new treadmills and Stairmasters are often all occupied during the evenings. Renovations include a substantially expanded weight room, with all new equipment and large windows. The squash courts were expanded to regulation size and re-floored. The locker rooms and basket rooms were reconfigured to make space for a new classroom, and an elevator was added.
Casey says Reed is a place that can get unbalanced because of the workload,
and the sports center is a place where people can get some of that balance
back through exercise. It is bringing the campus community together in healthy
and positive ways that werent possible before.
