Helping students with summer jobs and internships
The Reed career services office recently held two workshops on how to find a summer job—and more than 80 students attended. This was a real indication of students’ interest and concern about summer employment.
While job postings are helpful, 80 percent of all jobs—including summer jobs—are a result of networking. Parents can help their students by encouraging and supporting them through this challenging process. Networking often requires a lot of work, and the returns are not immediately obvious. Through perseverance, though, any student can be successful. The career services office can expand a student’s number and variety of contacts by connecting them with alumni, who often prove to be an important resource.

Internships can also be a valuable source of experience for students. Research needs to be done early for these, however, as many internships and awards have spring deadline dates. To increase students’ chances of finding internships, Reed participates in a national consortium of liberal arts colleges that provides access to over 10,000 internships ranging across most career fields. In addition, the college is a good source of opportunities for internships and research. |
As is always the case, the career services staff is happy to help students in their summer job search. Please encourage them to visit us.
