Starting to think about college and wondering what is involved? Join a senior admission staff member to hear about finding the right college for you.

Campus tour, 11:15 a.m.-Noon
Led by student tour guides, this is a great
way to get to know Reed.

Lunch with student body president Molly King '09 and vice president Nick Bradish '09, Noon-1:15 p.m.
Enjoy a short presentation about what is involved in applying to colleges and what is like to be a student at Reed, followed by Q & A.

Scavenger hunt, 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
Learn more about the layout of Reed College and what makes it unique in a fun jaunt across
campus looking for clues.

Friday, November 7

Registration

8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Gray lounge

Check in to receive your schedule booklet, campus map, information about Portland, and nametag. This is also a good place to relax and meet other parents throughout the day.

Attend a Class

9 a.m.-4 p.m.
A list of classes will be available when you check in for Parent & Family Weekend. (If you would like to join your student in a class, please ask what classes s/he is taking, as event staff does not have access to your student's schedule.)

The Philosophy of Bon Appétit

10:30-11 a.m.
Debby Bridges, general manager of Reed College Bon Appétit, and Daxton King, operations manager, will speak on Bon Appétit's philosophy of food service, which emphasizes sustainability, the use of organic products, and harvesting products from local farmers. They will answer your questions about the food options available.

Campus Tour

10 a.m. (also available at 2 p.m.)
Led by student tour guides, this is a great way to get to know Reed. Tour leaves promptly and take one hour.

Tour the Canyon

1 p.m. (also available on Saturday)
Come see the canyon and learn about the restoration of this beautiful natural area in Reed's backyard from Zac Perry, restoration ecologist. Tour leaves promptly at 1 p.m. and returns at 2:30 p.m. (Please wear outdoor shoes.)

Nuclear Reactor Tour

1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Reed College has the only nuclear reactor in the nation that is primarily operated by undergraduates. Licensed students use it for thesis projects and to increase their understanding of radiation and radioactivity. The tour is limited to 20 people per session.

Political Science Department: Ducey Internship Presentation

4:30 p.m.
Every year the Political Science department awards a number of Ducey summer internships to provide students with the opportunity to spend a summer working and researching full-time in a policy making organization. Join two of last summer's interns for a presentation on their experiences: Brian Radzinsky '08, spent the summer at the Arms Control Association (ACA) in Washington, DC, where he edited and wrote articles for ACA's journal, Arms Control Today. Radzinski also researched nuclear and conventional weapons proliferation, especially the nuclear programs of South Asian and Middle Eastern states and helped with a campaign to block passage of a nuclear cooperation agreement with India.
Sid Rothstein '08, interned at Metro, Portland's regional planning agency, where he worked in Public Involvement for Transit Planning. There he assisted on a number of projects, including the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Project, the Lake Oswego Streetcar Project, and the High Capacity Transit Project.

Family Reception hosted by President Colin Diver

4:30-6 p.m.
Come enjoy light refreshments and mingle with the president, faculty, and staff. Students are welcome with their families.

Dinner

6:30 p.m.
Dine with your student in commons or visit one of Portland's many superb restaurants. Restaurant guides are available at the parent lounge, in Gray Lounge.

Williams Fencing Tournament

10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Spectators are encouraged to attend the eleventh-annual Douglas Williams fencing tournament for Reed student.

Public Policy Lecture Series

2-4 p.m.
With both Republicans and Democrats adopting the mantle of "change," the 2008 presidential contest is shaping up to be one of the most consequential of the past half-century. While there is no doubt that the nation will have a new president in 2009, what of the other races on the ballot?

Join Paul Gronke, Reed College political science professor and director of the Early Voting Information Center; Caroline Tolbert, University of Iowa associate professor of political science; and Robert Eisinger, Lewis and Clark College associate professor of political science, for a panel discussion of the campaigns, the results, and the election's lasting implications, with reception following.

Chamber Music Northwest open rehearsal, the Triton Trio

3:30 p.m.
Three esteemed soloists join forces to present masterpieces from the horn repertoire. Ani Kavafian, violin; pianist Mihae Lee, piano; and William Purvis, horn, unite their distinguished and seasoned performing careers in this new ensemble which grew out of a performance of the Brahms Horn Trio. Formed in 2004, the Triton Trio performs innovative programs of various combinations of solos and duos along with the trios of Brahms, Harbison, Lansky, Ligeti and others. If you can't make it to the evening performance, please join us for this free event.

Chamber Music Northwest concert, the Triton Trio

Chamber Music Northwest presents the Triton Trio, three outstanding artist-colleagues, in a program including Brahms' Sonata No. 2 in A Major for Violin and Piano, Ligeti Trio for Horn, Violin and Piano, "Hommage à Brahms" (1982); and Brahms' Trio in E-Flat Major for Horn, Violin and Piano. Ani Kavafian, violin; Mihae Lee, piano; and William Purvis, horn, unite their distinguished and seasoned performing careers in this new ensemble which grew out of a performance of the Brahms Horn Trio.
