Parent & Family Weekend Schedule

Friday, November 6
Attend a Class
8 a.m.-4 p.m.
A list of classes will be available when you check in for Parent & Family
Weekend. (If you would like to join your student in a class, please
ask what classes s/he is taking, as event staff does not have access
to your student's schedule.)
Registration
8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Gray lounge
Check in to receive your schedule booklet, campus map, information about Portland, and nametag. This is also a good place to relax and meet other parents throughout the day.
The Philosophy of Bon Appétit
10:30-11 a.m.
Debby Bridges, general manager of Reed College Bon Appétit,
and Daxton King, operations manager, will speak on Bon Appétit's
philosophy of food service, which emphasizes sustainability, the use
of organic products, and harvesting products from local farmers. They
will answer your questions about the food options available.
Campus Tour
10 a.m. (also available at 2 p.m.)
Led by student tour guides, this is a great way to get to know
Reed. Tour leaves promptly and take one
hour.
Tour the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery
12 p.m., meet in the library lobby
Join Gregory MacNaughton '89, education outreach coordinator, for
a tour of the current exhibit: The Language of the Nude, Four Centuries
of Drawing the Body.
Tour the Canyon
1 p.m. (also available on Saturday)
Come see the canyon and learn about the restoration of this
beautiful natural area in Reed's backyard from Zac Perry, restoration
ecologist. Tour leaves promptly at 1 p.m. and returns at 2:30 p.m.
(Please wear outdoor shoes.)
Nuclear Reactor Tour
1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Reed College has the only nuclear reactor in the nation
that is primarily operated by undergraduates. Licensed students
use it for thesis projects and to increase their understanding of
radiation and radioactivity. The tour is limited to 20 people per
session.

3–4 p.m.
Learn about some of Reed’s 32 international programs from Paul DeYoung,
director of international programs, and David Rivera, assistant dean of international

Friday at Four concert
4 p.m.
The Reed music department invites you to attend an hour of music
showcasing the diverse talent of Reed students.
Political Science Department: Ducey Internship Presentation
4 p.m.
Every year the Political Science department
awards a number of Ducey summer internships to provide students with
the opportunity to spend a summer working and researching full-time
in a policy making organization. Join last summer's interns
for a presentation on their experiences.
Biology Department Seminar
4:10-5 p.m
Family Reception hosted by President Colin Diver
4:30-6 p.m.
Come enjoy light refreshments and mingle with the president,
faculty, and staff. Students are welcome with their families.
Break for Dinner
6:30 p.m.
Dine with your student in commons or visit one of Portland's
many superb restaurants. Restaurant guides are available at the parent
lounge, in Gray Lounge.
Student Theatre Performance
7:30 p.m.
Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare
Tickets for $1 per person can be reserved via http://info.reed.edu/theatre/tix.taf,
by calling 503/777-7284, or at the theatre box office, located at the north
end of the West parking lot. The box office will be open from 5:30 p.m. to
curtain.

Continental Breakfast & Conversation with President Colin Diver
9-9:45
a.m.
Introduced by Katie Schmidt, parent council chair, President Diver discusses
current topics pertaining to the campus and answers questions.
Conversation with the Deans
10-11:45 a.m.
Join Michael Brody, vice president and dean of students; Kathryn Smith,
director of health & counseling services; Lily Copenagle, associate
dean of student services for academic support; Ron Albertson, director
of career services; and Rhea Combs, interim assistant dean of multicultural
affairs, as they discuss student life, the parent’s role, and
planning for graduation, followed by time for questions from the audience.
Williams Fencing Tournament
10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Spectators are encouraged to attend the twelfth-annual Douglas Williams
fencing tournament for Reed student.
