A number of new faculty projects in the arts and humanities are already under way. Mark Bedau '77 will develop artificial life though experiments for use in a variety of philosophy courses, Jackie Dirks '82 is working with the library to create an interactive bibliographic tutorial on using World Wide Web resources in the history junior seminar, Robert Knapp is exploring the use of textual analysis software to provide new understandings of literary works, Gerri Ondrizek is creating interactive tutorials on computer graphics and video technology to be used in the newly upgraded computer art studio, David Schiff is creating a multimedia tutorial and reference guide on using technology for music notation and composition, and a group of faculty members, including art historian Minott Kerr, economist Kim Clausing, and historian Edward Segel, will develop a suite of electronic maps to be used across the art and humanities curriculum. As with the projects described above, each of these efforts is designed to enhance opportunities for independent student scholarship by using technology to teach the principles and methods of research in the arts and humanities.
Marianne Colgrove '84 is the associate director of computing and information services at Reed.
