Bosnia subject of Munk-Darling lecture

Professor of political science Stefan Kapsch gave a talk on "A Time to Act: Bosnia and the Future of NATO" in early March. The event was sponsored by the Munk-Darling Lecture Fund in International Relations. Kapsch lived and taught in the former Yugoslavia in 1995-96 as a Fulbright Scholar at the Faculty of Social Science of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He has continuing research interests and projects in the former Yugoslavia and central Europe in the area of transition and democratization.

In May and June of 1997 he served as a voter registration supervisor for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which was charged under the Dayton Accords with administration of elections in Bosnia. He returned in September 1997 as an OSCE polling supervisor in the northeastern city of Tuzla for the key municipal elections.

The Munk-Darling Lecture Fund in International Relations was endowed in 1996 by Reed trustee Martha Darling '66 and her family in honor of Frank Munk, professor emeritus of political science who taught at Reed from 1939 to 1965. He was the founder of the World Affairs Council in Oregon and dean of its predecessor, the Northwest Institute for International Relations.

Rivenburg elected to boards of national associations

Jon Rivenburg, director of institutional research, has been elected to the executive committee of the Pacific Northwest Association of Institutional Research and Planning. The association comprises representatives from 92 higher educational institutions in Alaska, British Columbia, California, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

Rivenburg also was recently elected to the board of directors of the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium. The consortium membership includes 131 institutions nationally, including baccalaureate colleges and research universities. Other members of the board come from diverse institutions, including Bates College, Columbia University, Dartmouth College, George Washington University, Haverford College, Occidental College, Randolph-Macon Woman's College, and South-western University. The board helps set the data-sharing activities of the membership and directs the research activities of the consortium staff.

Since 1988, Rivenburg has been director of institutional research at Reed, a position established by trustee Daniel Greenberg '62 and his wife, Susan Steinhauser. Rivenburg has also served as acting registrar in 1993 and as acting dean of admission from 1995 to 1997.
