student walkers Reed houses

Reed houses are often a part of the off-campus student's way of life. These homes have varied places in the college's history and in our hearts (like the Dustbin or the Icehouse), varied unofficial theme living options (like a vegan household, a rugby house, and an all-women house), and varied states of order and upkeep (names withheld to protect the innocent). If you don't know someone who lives in a Reed house, you surely have been to a party at one of them. To secure your place in one of these abodes, and thus in Reed housing history, your best bet is to know the right people in the right places. Otherwise, keep alert for signs posted around campus that advertise available rooms. These are sometimes done in eye-catching colors, or more often hastily and desperately scribbled on notebook paper, and usually hung in the mailroom or on the housing board down the hall from the residence life office in Eliot 101.

If you arrive in Portland towards the end of the summer, homeless and hoping to snag yourself a room at a famous house with a cool name, you may have to stay in a hotel, youth hostel, or a friend's house or station wagon while you look. However, it's a safe bet that with a little perseverance, it won't take you too long to find a house that likes you and that you like as well.
