Find an Opportunity
Voz Workers Rights Project
Reed students volunteering and working through off-campus federal work-study have established a relationship with this organization. They recognized Spanish speaking day laborers' need and desire to learn English. As a result, they have organized the teaching of ESL classes on a regular basis. There are classes on Monday-Friday between 11 am and 1 pm. Evening clasees can be arranged if there is interest by students and teachers. Classes are usually held at a bookstore or coffehouse near the street corner where day laborers wait for work, East Burnside and 6th.
Teachers are encouraged to do one two-hour classe a week, though
some do two. Teaching Spanish-speakers is better suited for those who
already have some Spanish under their belt, but your ability to
communicate knowledge and understanding is the most important factor
for success. Teaching qualifies for the off-campus federal work study internship program.
