The SMART book and reading program is a nonprofit organization that matches at-risk kindergarten, first graders, and second graders with community mentors in public schools throughout the state of Oregon. SMART reading partners read with and to students for a minimum of one hour a week from October through April. Founded in 1991, SMART has grown from 8 pilot schools to 140 schools statewide. SMART's mission is to enhance the reading skills, attitudes, and life prospects of children who need assistance and to allow adult volunteers and communities to experience the rewards of enriching young lives.

Still looking for an opportunity to match your interest?

Many great volunteer tutoring opportunities are available through the SEEDS office. The goal of the educational outreach program with SEEDS is to combine resources and volunteers to help out in the greater community. The partnerships that have been established have been done so because these organizations have proved to provide Reedies with positive tutoring, mentoring, or teaching experiences. There are many other agencies in Portland that offer wonderful programs. Students with specific interests are encouraged to browse the SEEDS database, and to discuss their interests with the SEEDS Coordinator. Please feel free to stop by the SEEDS office at 28 West near the RCA's. Many of the tutoring opportunities are nearby and require a small time commitment (just one or more hours a week on an allotted day). There are opportunities to work with kids of any age group. Federal work-study awards apply to many of these positions and pay more than most on-campus jobs! It is a great way to get off campus, to become involved in the greater community, and to affect others in a positive way. Come check out these opportunities and many more.
