Contemplation Meditation

Instructor:

  David Dubin and Irene Lundquist

This course introduces the meditation technique traditionally known as “peaceful abiding”. Instruction includes using the breath, movement, and thoughts or a phrase as objects of meditation. Our view is that the purpose of meditation is not to achieve a particular state of mind but rather developing the flexibility and stability to work with whatever thoughts and emotions arise. We see the untamed nature of our own mind, how difficult it is not to judge ourselves, and the challenge of holding a focus. We experience how our own minds work and, with consistent practice, we might see the world with greater clarity and perspective.

The course includes assigned readings from Turning the Mind into an Ally by Sakyong Mipham as well as discussion. The course also introduces some of the current scientific understanding of meditation.
