Stuart Smith: Adventure Grand Slam Lecture

Join the Reed Outing Club in welcoming Stuart Smith to Reed College February 18th, 7pm in Vollum Lecture Hall.

Stuart Smith grew up in Waco, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas School of Law with honors in 1985. He and his wife, Elizabeth, taught school in Kenya for a year through the Episcopal Church’s Volunteers For Mission program before he joined a Waco law firm where he has practiced law for 22 years. Smith has climbed Mt. Everest as well as the fourth and sixth highest mountains in the world and has also climbed the highest peak on each of the seven continents. Stuart has skied to both the North and South Poles, and he became the first American to complete what is known as the Adventure Grand Slam.
He continues to climb as much as he can while also pursuing other outdoor pursuits.

In 1998 Williams endowed a scholarship that would be awarded to financially deserving student fencers. The Annual Williams Scholarship Fencing Tournament is held each November. The $10,000 scholarship is shared by the top three tournament finishers eligible for financial aid. Non financial aid finishers are awarded hand-crafted gold, silver and bronze pins in the shape of fencing foils.

Wilderness First Responder Course

Every year during Paidea we offer the Wilderness First Responder Course(WFR) at Reed College. The Wilderness First Responder course has been designed specifically to meet the needs of wilderness guides, expedition leaders, and outdoor instructors. It is the outdoor education and recreation industrys' standard for wilderness medical training. It is the wilderness medicine training course for outdoor professionals...and the course you want your friends to have taken before you travel with them. The course includes WMTC adult CPR & AED certification.

The Reed Outing Club will subsidize a portion of the cost for the course for the individuals in return for volunteering your medical services to help the Reed Outdoor Programs and Education department safely staff and manage outdoor excursions.

This years WFR Certification is scheduled for January 18th-25th 2010. See Will Symms for more details.
