Reed Outing Club
The Outing Club, restarted in 1998 after a long hiatus, assists the Reed Community in having events and trips in the Northwest area. This includes paying for guides, transportation, classes, gear, social events, and anything else that might encourage outdoor activities. The focus of the Outing Club is to support and facilitate student-led non-technical trips, as well as to provide opportunities to explore technical activities such as ice climbing or whitewater kayaking under the direction of professional leadership.
A large portion of the budget goes to training students in Wilderness First Responder(WFR). This course is held annually during Padaia, and allows the students to gain this wonderful medical training while volunteering their time as medical personnell to facilitate trips for the Reed Outdoor Programs and Education department.
Backpack Co-op
Reed has a wonderful resource in the Backpack Co-op, where you can borrow literally all of the items needed for a backpacking trip free of charge, with the exception of your food! Email Backpack to find the current hours, or swing by the basement of Ladd in the Old Dorm Block to check out the large inventory. Items may be borrowed for up to two weeks free of charge; fees will be levied for items returned late or damaged.Gray Fund
In 1991, Betty Gray endowed a fund, the stated purpose of which is "to assure that Reed College will have stimulating cultural, social, and recreational programs of excellent quality on a regular and planned basis that will interest students, faculty, and staff members and involve these three groups together in activities outside the classroom that complement the college's academic program." The operational responsibility of the fund resides with the vice president and dean of student services. A committee composed of an equal number of students and faculty and staff members, in association with the director of student activities, acts as an advisory group for the use of the fund. Events have included a lecture by social activist Angela Davis, a performance by jazz diva Diane Schuur, and an annual showing of the Ann Arbor Film Festival. Recreational trips have included sea kayaking, a wildflower hike, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The Gray Fund committee plans events throughout the year and encourages input from the community. View the Gray Fund website.
Reed College Ski Cabin
The Reed College Ski Cabin, located in the village of Government Camp on Mt. Hood, is approximately an hour and fifteen minutes from the college by car; a Greyhound bus arrives and departs the village once a day. The cabin, watched over by a full-time manager, is available for use by Reed College student body, alumni, faculty, staff, and their family and friends. View the ski cabin website.
Outdoor Orientation Odyssey Trips
Every august Reed offers fantastic opportunities to explore the pacific northwest via foot, boat, body and mind through recreational odysseys for incoming students. Many students present and past reflect on this first activity at Reed College as one of the best times during their college careers, this is where friendships and the Reed culture begin. For more detailed information please check out the main Orientation Website.
