(a new initiative supported jointly by the Student Body and College President, May 5 2009)

campus imageReed College is committed to responsible stewardship of its campus environment and is aware that our actions and decisions impact our city, our region, and our planet. As an institution of higher learning, Reed is dedicated to investigating, understanding, and promoting awareness of its present and future impact on the natural world. Through broad community involvement and education, Reed strives to incorporate ideals of sustainability into the operations of the College and the daily lives of individuals on campus.

The Sustainability Committee is charged with encouraging proposals and suggestions from the community for ways to improve current sustainability practices on campus and to determine which practices to investigate and adopt. As part of this charge we are pleased to announce a competitive Student Body – Office of the President Sustainability Grant program for the 2009-2010 academic school year. The Reed College Student Body has dedicated 2% of student body funds and the  President’s Office has committed to match those  funds (approximately $6,000  per entity, $12000 total) to support projects for 2009-2010.

Proposals applications

The application deadline was Friday October 16.  Later submissions or suggestions will be considered on a first come first serve basis pending funding; email us with suggestions. Applicants will be notified shortly after proposals are submitted.

Eligibility

Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to submit proposals that focus on reducing an aspect of Reed’s environmental impact on the environment, for example, recycling, energy use, water use, transportation and parking, food use, etc. The application deadline was Friday October 16.  Later submissions or suggestions will be considered on a first come first serve basis pending funding. Applicants will be notified shortly after proposals are submitted.

Selection and Requirements

Proposals will be reviewed by the three students, three staff, and three faculty members of the Sustainability Committee and two alumni with expertise on sustainability.  Selection will be based on the quality of the proposed project and the ability of the project to reduce Reed’s environmental impact. Each grant recipient is required to produce a short (1-page) report which will be posted on the Reed Sustainability website. The committee also encourages recipients to publicize their project to the community if appropriate, for example, by hosting project tours, discussing the project at a Reed event, preparing a poster for public display, etc.  All projects and the required 1-page report must be completed by August 30, 2010, the first day of classes for the fall 2010 semester.  Questions about this program should be directed to Dr. Bob Kaplan, Chair of the Sustainability Committee: bob.kaplan@reed.edu.
