Printing to a networked printer
To print to a networked black and white printer, you must set up your computer to print to that printer and you must connect to the Print Server, following the instructions for connecting to a server.
You can set up your computer to print to as many printers as you want. Simply follow these instructions for each printer. You only need to set up each printer once.
You will need to connect to the Print Server each time you restart your computer and want to print. To print, connect to the Print Server, then print from your application. If you are printing from a public computer, do not forget to disconnect from the Print Server before leaving the computer. Otherwise the next person will be able to print using your account!
Remember, color printing is different. You must still set up your computer to print to the printer using the instructions below. However, instead of connecting to the Print Server, from your application print to the color printer, then okay the print job by going to http://printing.reed.edu
Students are always allowed to print to billed printers in the IRCs, the library, and other public labs. You may only print to an unbilled printer like a faculty printer if you have permission from the person who pays for the supplies for that printer. This is almost always the faculty secretary nearest to the printer.
Setting up a printer
To set up a printer you need to know: the name of the printer (you may need to ask the person who maintains the printer for the printer name), the model/make of the printer (look on the printer itself), and the zone the printer lives in. If you need to get information on a printer, visit our Printer Model Reference.
Many of the printers on campus are Hewlett-Packards (HPs), including the printers in the IRCs. Mac OS 9 does not have Postscript Printer Descriptions (PPDs) or, simply put, drivers for them. If you are going to print to an HP black and white printer, follow the instructions below for “Installing HP black and white printer drivers.”
Installing HP black and white printer drivers
- Connect to the Tool Chest.
- Double-click on Utilities, then Printing/Font, then HP LaserJet Mac OS 8-10.
- Drag the hp LaserJet Installer to your desktop.
- Disconnect from the Tool Chest.
- Double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer.
- Click Continue.
- Make sure Easy Install is selected, then click Install.
- Click OK. The installer should report that installation was successful.
- Click Quit.
You are now ready to set up your computer to print to any HP black and white printer. Proceed to “Selecting a Printer”.
If you want to print to a color printer on campus you need to get the PPD for it from the Tool Chest. We also put other commonly used PPDs on the Tool Chest. Look in the Tool Chest->Utilities->Printing/Font->Mac OS 7-9 PPDs. PPDs go in your System Folder->Extensions->Printer Descriptions. If you need help installing the PPD or don’t find what you are looking for, contact CUS.
Selecting a printer
- From the Apple menu, select Chooser.
- Select LaserWriter 8 in the upper left pane.
- Select the appropriate zone in the lower left pane.
-
If you are setting up an Apple printer double-click on the printer and the Chooser will do the rest for you. If you are setting up another make of printer proceed to step 4.
- Select the printer, then click Setup.
- Click Select PPD.
- Choose the appropriate file from the list of Printer Descriptions, then click Select.
- Close the Chooser when it is done.
You are ready to print. To print, connect to the Print Server, then print from your application.
Printing double-sided in OS 9
All of the IRC printers can print double sided. If you have set up IRC Spooler, you can print double-sided from native OS 9 applications by following these steps.
- From the File menu of the application from which you are printing, select Print...
- In the print dialog, click on the pop-up menu showing General, then select Layout.

- Check Print on Both Sides, and confirm that the correct binding is selected (on the long edge, which is the left-most option).

- Once you have checked the other settings, hit Print.
